Unlike in men, female hair loss rarely leaves completely bald areas; more commonly, hair thins evenly across the whole scalp (diffuse thinning), with the crown part line gradually widening. The hairline is often relatively preserved, and most importantly, the existing hair remains. The key is that it must not look drawn on. A uniform single tone or oversized dots look unnatural, so color and density must be finely calibrated in gradations.

Female hair loss has many causes — hormones, nutrition, stress, medical conditions. If the follicles are still alive, preserving treatment may need to come before SMP.
