If you have looked into SMP, you have probably heard that it fills in the look of density by placing dots. That is true. But up close, dots alone can sometimes look rather flat. To get straight to the point: true naturalness comes not from dots, but from lines.
Every strand of human hair has its own direction and length. That is why I use the 3D line technique, drawing in short lines with dimension to match your hair flow and everyday styling direction. Many said SMP drawn in lines was difficult, even impossible — but the work I have done shows it is entirely achievable.

From dots to lines — what is different
Internationally, 3D SMP has moved beyond placing uniform dots, evolving toward varied shade, angle, and flow to create dimension. Motential's 3D Line Technique goes one step further, drawing the very flow of the hair as lines.
Why it looks three-dimensional
Even with the same pigment, the result depends entirely on how it goes in. The 3D Line Technique fine-tunes each of the following.
Direction
Line angles follow the actual growth flow of the hair and the direction of the part.
Stroke
Line length and thickness vary by area to avoid monotony.
Shade
Dots, lines, and shading work together to create depth and reduce any floating, painted-on look.
Styling

Why not everyone can do this — a hand that knows how to draw
Placing dots and drawing lines are entirely different things. A line demands fingertip control of direction, curvature, and pressure, and once it goes in, it is hard to undo. That is why it takes a hand that knows how to draw.
To deepen my SMP work, I have trained across dots, lines, and planes through fine-art tattooing. Beyond simple shapes, I have rendered a wide range of artwork on the body — even transforming challenging areas like heart-surgery scars into striking pieces. Only a hand this fluent with line and plane can draw the flow of hair onto the scalp.
A technique presented on the world stage
This 3D Line Technique did not stay within Korea. I presented it in person at the 2022 ISHRS World Congress in Panama, introducing it to the international stage, where it drew strong interest. It is the result of continually refining the technique through exchange with the society.
