Covering scalp scars naturally
to help heal the scars within
This procedure fills hair transplant scars, surgical or trauma scars, and scarred areas where hair no longer grows with fine follicle shading, blending them naturally into the surrounding scalp.
Some scars can neither be removed nor covered with a hair transplant. That is why, even for those who felt there was no way forward, SMP becomes hope.
Countless times, we have resolved procedures everyone said could not be done — cases so difficult no doctor dared attempt them — and given patients back a happy life.
More than 1,000 scar cover cases over the past eight years. Even for me, every scar demands special focus — but it is by no means an impossible or extremely difficult procedure.
What is scar SMP?
Scar SMP is a non-surgical procedure that places fine dots (follicle shading) of medical-grade pigment into scarred areas of the scalp, matching spots that look bare or shiny because of scarring to the tone of the surrounding hair and scalp. It does not remove the scar itself; it works by visually softening the scar's edges and contrast so it becomes less noticeable.
Scar tissue differs from normal scalp in color, texture, and follicle distribution, making it far more demanding than standard SMP. Pigment spreads or clumps easily, and needle angle and depth must be finely adjusted to the scar's depth and tension — so the practitioner's skill and medical understanding of the scalp and hair determine the result.
Effective for these scars
Hair transplant strip surgery (FUSS) scars
The horizontal linear scar across the back of the head. We fill the area revealed by short haircuts with follicle shading for a natural correction.
Non-incision FUE dot scars
Small white dot-shaped scars scattered across the extraction area. Matching the surrounding density and tone reduces their distracting look.
Surgical and trauma scars
Hairless areas where hair no longer grows, such as scars from scalp surgery, accidents, or trauma.
Burns and other cicatricial scars
Suitability is determined after diagnosis, depending on the condition of the scar.
Density reinforcement after hair transplant
A companion procedure that corrects sparse-looking gaps between transplanted hairs along with scars, raising the overall finish.
Recommended For
- Those who find it hard to wear their hair short because of a scar on the back of the head from a past hair transplant
- Those with a scalp scar from surgery or trauma that makes only that area look bare
- Those for whom re-transplantation into the scar is difficult, or who want natural coverage without surgery
- Those who want to address scars and density in one step, alongside a hair transplant
What makes Motential's scar SMP different
Diagnosed and performed by a hair transplant specialist
Scar SMP looks natural only with an understanding of scar tissue and hair growth direction. Dr. Injae Lee, an ABHRS- and ISHRS-certified hair transplant specialist, personally handles everything from consultation and design to the procedure and aftercare.
We look at hair transplantation and SMP together
Covering is not always the only answer for a scar. If the follicles are alive, re-transplantation may be right; if it is scar tissue, SMP is. Because we perform both procedures, we can propose the direction that truly fits each patient.
Color, dot density, and depth designed for the scar
Considering the scar's color and texture and the tone of the surrounding hair, we fine-tune the size, spacing, and color of each dot so the result neither spreads nor stands out over time.

The Procedure
Diagnosis & Consultation
The director personally diagnoses the scar (color, depth, presence of follicles) and gives honest guidance on whether SMP or re-transplantation is the right direction, along with the results you can expect.
Design & Color Matching
Dot density and color are designed to match the surrounding hair tone and hairline.
Procedure
Fine follicle-like shading is applied to the scar area. (Usually done in 2–3 sessions)
Follow-Up & Retouch
We check how the color settles after each session, adjust the density, and refine the result with a retouch if needed.
Aftercare
We provide aftercare guidance for color retention and scalp care, and monitor your progress.
Recovery & Precautions
- Avoid rubbing or scratching the scalp for a period after the procedure.
- Avoid saunas, swimming, excessive sweating, and direct sunlight for a period.
- Slight tone changes may occur while the color settles, and it stabilizes over the course of the sessions.
- The procedure may be limited by scalp conditions or skin status, so please let us know during your consultation.
