Before Marking a Patient,
I Marked Myself First

On the left arm of the Motential director is a tattoo that looks like a barcode. It is a seven-year research log of scalp micropigmentation, made of hundreds of dots. Before treating patients, he verified everything on his own body first.

The Barcode

Not a Barcode —
a 7-Year Research Log

From a distance it looks like a barcode, but this tattoo is actually a cluster of hundreds of dots. Each dot is a seven-year research log, personally tested and recorded to advance scalp micropigmentation.

SMP, which began around 2001, remained technically stagnant for a long time. Individual variation, poor pigment retention — many limitations were accepted as inevitable. Instead of accepting them, the director made himself the test subject.

Instead of Accepting the Limits,
He Researched Them

He tested directly on his own left arm and leg as a canvas. He apprenticed under an internationally recognized ink artist, relearning the principles of fine-line artistry applied to skin.

Needle angle and speed, penetration depth. The differences created by pigment viscosity, concentration and particle size. Recording each of these fine variables one by one, he elevated SMP into the domain of medicine.

Research Log

A 7-Year Research Log,
Marked on His Own Body

There was no teacher and no textbook. He used his own left arm and leg as a canvas, and became the pupil of a world-class fine-line artist to relearn dots, lines and planes.

Needle-free Laser

No Longer Needles —
Now It Is Done with Lasers

Motential SMP is a needle-free method that sets pigment using laser energy.

Unlike conventional methods that repeatedly puncture the skin with needles, laser energy sets the pigment into the scalp. This reduces needle pain and pigment spread, and allows finer control of the density and shading of every single dot.

  • Minimizes pain and pigment spread by reducing needle punctures
  • Laser wavelength, pulse and energy precisely tuned to the scalp
  • Dot density and shading designed to match real hair and skin tone

※ The needle-free laser method is the core of the MLD system, established through 7 years of firsthand research at Motential.

Medical Laser Densification

SMP redefined as a medical protocol. Laser wavelength, pigment, density and depth are precisely engineered to the characteristics of your scalp.

MLD Protocol

4 Standards
Engineered by Medicine

Not a technique for applying color, but a medical process of understanding and engineering the scalp.

01

Laser Wavelength and Energy Tuning

Laser wavelength and energy are precisely adjusted to your scalp characteristics.

02

Density, Arrangement and Shading Design

Density, arrangement and shading are designed to match your real hair and skin tone.

03

Safety with a 10-Year Horizon

Long-term safety comes first, with results projected ten years ahead.

04

Depth Calibrated for Healing

Treatment depth and intensity are calibrated for how the skin will heal.

Outcome

What MLD Has Achieved

Laser wavelength, dot density and shading are designed around real hair and skin tone. From medically correcting botched prior work to building natural density.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.What exactly is scalp micropigmentation?
SMP places tiny dot-shaped pigments in the scalp to create the appearance of hair follicles. It does not make hair actually grow, but it reduces the color contrast between scalp and hair, making it look visually fuller.
Q.It is semi-permanent — will I need retouches later?
SMP can fade gradually over time. Longevity varies with UV exposure, skin type, sebum, treatment depth and lifestyle. A retouch is not required on a fixed schedule, but reinforcement after a few years may help keep the color natural.
Q.How does needle SMP differ from laser SMP?
The needle method inserts pigment into the skin with fine needles; the laser method delivers pigment without needles using finely controlled energy. Each has pros and cons, and the right choice depends on scalp condition and treatment area.
Q.Does SMP hurt?
For most people it is a tolerable stinging. It is done shallower and finer than a regular tattoo, so pain is relatively mild. It varies with pain sensitivity, area and scalp condition.
Q.Why is the pain milder?
Because instead of packing color in deep like a regular tattoo, it repeatedly creates small follicle-like dots in a shallow layer. Keeping depth and pressure consistent further reduces skin irritation.
Q.How is clinic SMP different from SMP at a shop?
The biggest difference is whether the scalp and hair loss can be medically evaluated together. A clinic can assess hair loss progression, scalp disease, scars, transplant eligibility and the need for medication. SMP may look purely cosmetic, but scalp condition and depth control are critical.
Q.Why is SMP done with dots rather than lines?
On closely cropped hair, follicles look like tiny dots, not lines. Natural SMP therefore places small dots irregularly to mimic follicles. Where hair flow matters — hairlines and partings — a 3D line technique is added on top of dots for dimension.
Q.Would rubbing in ink densely not look better?
It can look dark and dense in one sitting. But SMP is not about applying a lot of color — it is about leaving small dots at exactly the right depth. Rubbing methods risk spreading, blotching, flat unnatural patches and color change.
Q.Is SMP a hair loss treatment?
SMP does not stop hair loss or grow hair. It is, however, effective at visually filling in sparse-looking scalp, and combining it with hair loss treatment or transplantation often produces better results.
Q.How long does SMP last?
It varies, but usually several years or more. Color can soften over time, and heavy UV exposure or an oily scalp can fade it faster. What matters more than duration is whether it fades naturally as time passes.
Q.Can SMP turn blue?
It can. If pigment goes in too deep, dots spread, or the wrong pigment is chosen, it can look bluish or gray. Depth, pigment, dot size and density control are what keep the result natural.
Q.Can SMP be removed?
Laser removal can be attempted. It rarely disappears in one session and may take several treatments. Difficulty depends on pigment depth, color, area and skin condition.
Q.Can I return to daily life right after SMP?
Light daily activities are usually fine. Right after treatment, avoid shampooing, sweaty exercise, saunas, swimming, alcohol and strong sunlight. Care during the first few days is important for pigment stability.
Q.How many sessions does SMP take?
Usually two or more sessions. After the first, we watch how the color settles, then match density and tone in the retouch. Building up gradually looks more natural than going dark from the start.
Q.Can women get SMP too?
Yes. For women, fine pigments matched to hair color are typically placed where the parting looks wide, naturally covering see-through scalp without cutting the hair. (See the womens part-line SMP page for details.)

General Questions

Q.Can I have the procedure or surgery on the same day as my consultation?
It depends on the procedure type, booking schedule and scalp condition. When precise diagnosis and design are needed, scheduling a separate date after consultation is safer.
Q.How is the cost determined?
Cost depends on the scope, required graft count, difficulty, scarring, prior procedures and retouch plans. Even procedures with the same name can require different steps for different people. (Non-covered fees are disclosed in advance.)
Q.Can transplants or SMP done at other clinics be corrected?
Often, yes. We first assess the existing line, scars, density, pigment spread and remaining hair. Corrections require an even more careful plan than first-time procedures.
Q.Can I get a rough consultation just by sending photos?
We can suggest a general direction. An accurate diagnosis — graft count, cost and feasibility — requires directly checking scalp condition, hair thickness, density, elasticity and progression.
Q.I am not sure which treatment is right for me.
Hair loss treatment, transplantation, SMP and eyebrow transplants serve different goals. First we determine whether your hair needs preserving, new implantation, or visual supplementation. After precise diagnosis, we guide you to the best fit.
Q.Does the director personally handle consultations and procedures?
Yes. At Motential the director personally handles consultation, diagnosis, design, procedures and aftercare. It is not a setup where staff operate and the director only consults.
Q.Is consultation available in Japanese?
Yes. We provide dedicated support for visitors from Japan. Please let us know when booking if you would like consultation in Japanese.
