Before Marking a Patient,
I Marked Myself First
On the left arm of the Motential director is a tattoo that looks like a barcode. It is a seven-year research log of scalp micropigmentation, made of hundreds of dots. Before treating patients, he verified everything on his own body first.
Not a Barcode —
a 7-Year Research Log
From a distance it looks like a barcode, but this tattoo is actually a cluster of hundreds of dots. Each dot is a seven-year research log, personally tested and recorded to advance scalp micropigmentation.
SMP, which began around 2001, remained technically stagnant for a long time. Individual variation, poor pigment retention — many limitations were accepted as inevitable. Instead of accepting them, the director made himself the test subject.
Instead of Accepting the Limits,
He Researched Them
He tested directly on his own left arm and leg as a canvas. He apprenticed under an internationally recognized ink artist, relearning the principles of fine-line artistry applied to skin.
Needle angle and speed, penetration depth. The differences created by pigment viscosity, concentration and particle size. Recording each of these fine variables one by one, he elevated SMP into the domain of medicine.
A 7-Year Research Log,
Marked on His Own Body
There was no teacher and no textbook. He used his own left arm and leg as a canvas, and became the pupil of a world-class fine-line artist to relearn dots, lines and planes.

No Longer Needles —
Now It Is Done with Lasers
Motential SMP is a needle-free method that sets pigment using laser energy.
Unlike conventional methods that repeatedly puncture the skin with needles, laser energy sets the pigment into the scalp. This reduces needle pain and pigment spread, and allows finer control of the density and shading of every single dot.
- Minimizes pain and pigment spread by reducing needle punctures
- Laser wavelength, pulse and energy precisely tuned to the scalp
- Dot density and shading designed to match real hair and skin tone
※ The needle-free laser method is the core of the MLD system, established through 7 years of firsthand research at Motential.
Laser vs. needle SMP — the top 3 questions, answered by Dr. Injae Lee
Not the Same
Scalp Tattoo
Generic SMP
A method stuck at circa-2001 technique, accepting individual variation and fading as unavoidable.
MLD
Medical Laser Densification
SMP redefined as a medical protocol. Laser wavelength, pigment, density and depth are precisely engineered to the characteristics of your scalp.
4 Standards
Engineered by Medicine
Not a technique for applying color, but a medical process of understanding and engineering the scalp.
Laser Wavelength and Energy Tuning
Laser wavelength and energy are precisely adjusted to your scalp characteristics.
Density, Arrangement and Shading Design
Density, arrangement and shading are designed to match your real hair and skin tone.
Safety with a 10-Year Horizon
Long-term safety comes first, with results projected ten years ahead.
Depth Calibrated for Healing
Treatment depth and intensity are calibrated for how the skin will heal.
What MLD Has Achieved
Laser wavelength, dot density and shading are designed around real hair and skin tone. From medically correcting botched prior work to building natural density.

What 7 Years of Research
Have Proven
Doctors from abroad come to learn the technique, and broadcast crews reach out to film first — the results speak for themselves.
The Records Prove It
An endless scroll of thousands of treatment records, and the story of the barcode tattoo told on video for the first time — the dots on his left arm were where it all began.

“Before treating patients,
I verified it on my own body.”
— The one principle left after 7 years and thousands of treatments
Recommended For
Hairline · Part Line
Fills lines and partings that look sparse, sharpening your overall impression.
Crown Density
Adds visual density where scalp shows through the hair.
Scar · Buzz-Cut Cover
Creates natural shading over scars or short buzz-cut styles.
Correcting Botched Work
Existing SMP that has spread or turned unnatural is diagnosed first, then naturally corrected and refined.
SMP Programs by Purpose
Choose by purpose, not by price list. Every program is diagnosed and performed by the director himself.
Density SMP
Visual density reinforcement for the crown and part line, using needle-free laser pigmentation.
→Hairline SMP
Includes a design session drawn by the director to fit your face. 3D line technique, not just dots.
→Full-Shave SMP
Uniform shading across the entire head — full-scalp design for the skinhead style.
→Scar SMP
Covers strip-surgery and accident scars, matched to the surrounding scalp tone.
→Discoloration and spreading from prior work are diagnosed, then corrected. Removal and re-treatment in one place.
→Post-Transplant SMP
Reinforces density left wanting after a hair transplant, without re-implantation.
Common to All Programs — Diagnosis by the director (AI hair microscopy) → design → treatment → before/after microscope report → retouch plan. For the dedicated womens part-line guide, see here.

Director of Motential Clinic · Injae Lee, MD
After seven years of self-research, he redefined SMP as a medical technique called MLD. Thousands of treatments and the attention of media and overseas doctors prove the results. The barcode is not an aesthetic choice — it is the responsibility of verification.
